Business Travel in Haiti

Haiti is a true third world country and the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. As such caution and preplanning your trip are important. The US State Department recommends avoiding travel to Haiti. They also recommend that you register with them if you do travel to Haiti.

Haiti shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic. Haiti was originally a Spanish colony. It was taken over by the French in the 1600’s and then by the African slaves living there. Most goods and services are in short supply so you should be sure to bring with you what you need. There are several good hotels in the capitol of Port-au-Prince. You should pre-arrange for travel to the hotel and elsewhere as public transportation including taxis can be dangerous. The airport itself can be a place where criminals size you up for future robberies.
